Eleven Ideas To Develop A Business
Copyright 2003 Stephanie Kelly
You are tired of punching the clock everyday, tired of office
politics, worried about downsizing and retirement, tired of
overtime, tired of being tired, and you have decided that enough
is enough. You have decided to take control of your time, your
income, and your future, you have decided to spread your
entrepreneurial wings and go into business for yourself!
The only problem is that you have no idea what type of business
you should start. (I absolutely believe that you must be
passionate about the business you choose if you want to achieve
any level of success. You can visit
http://www.saksbbi.com/goals.html for some in depth information
on determining your passions and using them as a base for a
business that will be succeed.)
Sometimes though, a few ideas can get your creative juices
flowing so the following is a list of creative ideas that others
have used. I hope that you will be able to use them to spark
some ideas of your own.
- Alterations: If you love to sew consider turning your
talents into a profitable home business. New outfits rarely fit
properly, and many uniforms (from officials like police and
fire-fighters, to clubs like boy scouts and brownies) require
patches to be sewn on from time to time. Many people don't have
the talent or the time to take care of these tasks and gladly
pay someone else to do them!
- Sewing: If your talents as a seamstress go beyond
alterations consider custom made items such as wedding, pageant,
and special occasion (prom, homecoming, etc…) apparel. You could
also consider custom made draperies, slipcovers, or linens.
- Buying and Selling Antiques and/or Collectibles: Do you love
scouting flea markets, garage sales, and second hand stores for
items of value? Do you have an extensive knowledge about a
specific "collectible" line? (Depression-era glass, Hummel
figurines, Barbie dolls, baseball cards, the list of things
people collect and will pay top dollar for is extensive!) You
don't even need to set up a shop to do this, sell your
"treasures" out of an extra room in your home, a basement, a
garage, a flea market, a consignment shop, on the Internet,
just about anywhere.
- Baking: Do you have a recipe that everyone just goes crazy
over? More than a few people have begun successful business by
cooking or baking at home and marketing to local people.
- Gardening: Do you have a green thumb? You can cultivate
produce, exotic plants, houseplants, herbs, bedding plants, to
sell directly to customers, produce stands, health food stores,
nurseries, etc. Create a Website that provides gardening tips,
and sells gardening supplies.
- Childcare: An old standard for home businesses, but if you
love caring for "little people" you can create a lucrative
business. It can be as small as caring for one or two
neighborhood children in your own home, or beginning with one
day care center and growing it into an entire chain!
- Administrative Assistant: Are you a great typist,
bookkeeper? Are your clerical skills polished? Become a Free
Agent and contract with individual business people or companies
to perform these tasks for them.
- Computer Specialist: Do all of your friends and business
associates call you to fix their computer problems? Do you have
special skills in desktop publishing or graphic design? These
are highly marketable skills. A consulting business may be just
for you.
- Bed and Breakfast: If you have some extra room and are a bit
on the hospitable side, opening a Bed and Breakfast can be very
rewarding and profitable.
- Photographer: If photography has always been your hobby,
why not turn it into a business? Wedding pictures, family
portraits, portfolios for would-be-models, are all photographs
that people pay for. Local newspapers and real estate agents
use photographs every day. Get creative with your creative
hobby!
- Decorator: Do you love colors and patterns? Have a flair
for what looks good together? Can you put together a room that
conveys the mood someone else wants it to convey? Interior
Decorators for homes and businesses earn top dollar!
This article has only touched on eleven ideas to start a home
business. It may take some time to discover how to use your
talents to create a business, but whatever your talents are they
can be turned into to a profitable business that you will love!
